I think of myself most deeply as an explorer and an observer. Some people like to be in the thick of things, the focus of attention, an integral cog. I feel more comfortable, confident and effective on the periphery, able to see all the action without being swept up or swayed by it.

As a kid I tended to wander off. Curious about what was beyond the current area, around a corner, upstairs. often I would find interesting places and people, even if there was nothing to find I enjoyed the experience.

These days I use exploration and observation as a kind of meditation. taking in what I see, hear and touch with a sort of casual interest, my mind clears, I’m able to breathe deeply and I relax.

I am curious about this effect, this aspect of my experience. My current theory is that in this state I have no expectation, no judgement and the clarity and freedom I feel is the energy normally put into the constant evaluation of my environment, energy which is largely wasted.
