There is a cool trail behind our office that’s really handy for taking a walk at lunch, especially if you bring a dog to work (which I do). It’s quite nice, really does feel like you are on a trail, not just a little path surrounded by houses (which is what it is).

The one downside of this trail is … the coyotes. There are usually a few reports of coyotes on the trail or in the woods. A couple of times in the last five years they’ve even come right up to the office area. Given the number of dogs at our office it’s a bit unsettling !

Given that we live in Squamish, work in Burnaby and try to take Huxly out for hikes around Squamish and North Vancouver we are bound to encounter some animals, but I’m a bit surprised that since we brought Huxly into our family we’ve encountered so many animals, so far bears, wolves and coyotes.

I’m not worried about it really. Huxly’s reaction to wild beasties in the area, generally he goes very still and then starts making little ‘huf’ bark noises. He’ll also sometimes do some air sniffing and stop, refusing to go forward. I like this reaction, especially over charging after whatever he smells !

Really need to remember to keep his bear bell in his bag though !
