I’ve started running, literally, going for runs.

A few weeks ago I tore the rotator cuff in my right shoulder. This means a few months of not being able to use my shoulder for normal awesome activities like swimming and biking and snowboarding.

So I thought about what I can do to work off my new found excess energy. I figured I’d try running.

As a kid I loved running but in my late teens I put on too many pounds and running became uncomfortable and painful, shin splints and plantar fasciitis.

I’m still carrying too much weight but figure trying to run now might be a good way to drop the pounds and keep enough energy drained to avoid going crazy.

I’ve started using Zombies, Run! and 5K Runner on my iPhone. The combination of these apps is awesome. 5K Runner gives me the prompts on when to run and when to walk, I don’t want to run too fast or too much too soon, the app has a progression to build stamina and strength over 8 weeks or so.

Zombies, Run! makes it all a bit more fun. The app has a story line with missions to run to get supplies for Abel Township all while avoiding the zombie hordes. It’s really immersive.

So far running feels really good, going out is so simple, no special clothes or prep work, just put on my shoes, grab my phone and out the door.
